The list went on forever, Professor McGonagall continued calling names, and students were sorted quickly. Harry hated his last name, the moment of truth could have come so much sooner if his surname had been Aarons, but he'd have to wait. The acid in his stomach was churning, making him uneasy. He felt as if he had been waiting for hours, and his stomach felt as if it would explode at any second. His name was called, the room went dead silent. Everyone had been waiting for this, not just Harry himself. He stepped forward and whispers broke out among the students. His eyes caught three in particular: Draco - whispering darkly to his classmates, Hermione - whispering excitedly to her prefect, Percy, and Ron - whispering to no one, simply staring with wide and expecting eyes. The hat was placed on his head and slipped over his eyes. The hat whispered to him, deliberating on which house to put him in. Harry thought back to the hat, 'Not Slytherin, Not Slytherin.' What happened next shocked the entire wizarding world, and cost Fred seven sickles to his twin brother's hand. The hat laughed darkly in Harry's ear with a reminder to him, "Don't be stupid, boy. Slytherin will help you on the way to greatness, no doubt about that."

"SLYTHERIN!"

As the hat was pulled from his head, Harry was met by cheering whoops from the Slytherin table, except for from Draco. He made his way to his table and was greeted by high fives and hand shakes. "We got Potter! We got Potter! We got Potter!" echoed from the Slytherins, and Harry couldn't help but smile. Sitting now he saw one thing that worried him. At the high table, where the staff was seated, the only one who didn't look shocked about the recent sorting was a greasy-haired male professor. He looked simply overjoyed.

Soon everyone was sorted and seated. Dumbledore then said his peace and started the feast. Harry rather enjoyed all of the food that appeared before him but couldn't help but to worry. Slytherin hadn't seemed right for him when he had met Draco Malfoy, in fact it worried him to be sorted there. Now with Malfoy as his housemate, and the staff looking so confused, his stomach felt just as it had before he had been sorted. Malfoy, seated across from Harry, smiled at him. "I knew you'd belong here." he said and stretched a hand across the table, Harry shook it, deciding that if the hat had agreed with Draco there was nothing more that Harry could do but to let go of the small prejudiced thought of Slytherin he had formed before the ceremony and just go with it. "Happy to be here." he said truthfully with a smile.

The Daily Prophet's front page headline screamed "HARRY POTTER SORTED SLYTHERIN!" the next day. The wizarding world was sent into a tizzy. How could the boy that had saved the world from He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named be sorted into his same house? The Ministry was in even more of a tizzy than the rest because they knew something that the rest of the world did not. A prophecy had been told and those ministry workers who knew of it, they knew that trouble could result. This prophecy, told years ago, had cast Harry as either the hero or the fall of their peaceful existence. They knew that Voldemort lurked somewhere, out of sight, and knew that their only hope was now sorted into Slytherin which made it very hard to see Harry as anything but false hope. Some people, like Lucius Malfoy, thought of this as a good thing. Some people worried, people like Arthur Weasley. He warned all of his children to stay away from the boy, and he meant every word, even if he couldn't tell them exactly why Harry was to be avoided.

At Hogwarts, all was well. The students didn't expect any more trouble from Harry than from any other Slytherin, and most of the staff had completely dropped signs of their unease. Harry found his dormitory to be a bit more drafty than preferred but he liked it otherwise; nothing could pale in comparison to his cupboard, after all. The students now live daily lives, their worst worries being their studies and relations, Filtch and his cat Mrs. Norris, and Quidditch tryouts and housepoints. But would those things change and how quickly would change be upon them?
