In 1801, the royal family were told of the wizarding community's existence. It was decided, for the safety of the non-magical citizens, that a school should be formed, for the education of the next generation of witches and wizards, to learn their craft in a safe environment.
The royals gathered together their finest advisors, who were to instruct them on the construction of the school. They were told of wizarding schools the world over, and agreed it would be best to consult the four most famous wizards of the time -
Elizabeth Quetzal,
Henry Snakes,
Joseph Toucan and
Mary Zorro. They were all friends from their school years, and were delighted to accept the royal invitation to be the Founders and first Governors of the Royal Academy.
The Academy is an Unplotable castle, with the strongest possible Muggle repelling charms cast on it. It contained all the rooms to house an elite wizarding Academy, inspired by the many magical schools already founded. The royals were so impressed with the final result, they gave it their seal of approval, hence the name. The Royal Academy of Sorcery and Wizardry was born.
The Four Founders co-operated well, each having a House to place the students with qualities they admired and were famous for.
Mary Zorro's had perfected her telepathic ability, and admired those that used their brain power;
Joseph Toucan fought with a dragon, so he admired bravery;
Henry Snakes like to have control, and admired ambition; and
Elizabeth Quetzal was a healer and peacemaker, and admired those like herself. They placed powerful charms on the House Common Rooms, so only those from that particular House can enter. Even today, the ghosts of the Founders can only enter their own House Common Room!
All things were not well however. Snakes' desire to have outright control of the school led to fights between him and the other 3 Founders. After one particularly bad argument with Joseph Toucan, Henry left in a huff, declaring he would return to be supreme Governor of the school. He was never seen again, and, in time, the other Founders left the school in the hands of the next generation of Governors, and the position of Headmaster was created.
It is believed that Snakes left behind a secret chamber, so he could fulfill his desire to rule the school at a later date, or even after death, through his descendants. The school has been thoroughly searched, however, and no such chamber has been found.
